Alongside half a dozen designs by other CSM students, I contributed with Will Biggs to a special “Best Of” edition of NUDE Magazine, called “NEWD”. Concept stages were worked through with Will, and we decided to put forward my design pictured below, which was printed full-bleed onto Newsprint and was available in the shops.

As the article was a nostalgic look back at home-recorded mixtapes, my visual approach aimed to contrast the mechanical with the personal. I felt that scans of hand-written lettering would be fitting for titles, whilst I wanted a slick, minimalist look for the body copy — picking up on the manufacturers’ branding.
The brown tint that I added to our scanned cassettes was a reference to the magnetic tape inside them, and I included small details like a “play” triangle and “stop” square before and after the article.
